Choosing the right hygiene brush for my food production application

3 reasons choosing the correct hygiene brush is important.

  • Effectiveness.  Get the job done properly - only 100% is good enough.
  • Efficiency.  Get the job done with the minimum amount of effort in the minimum amount of time.
  • Longevity.  Using the right brush for the job will increase the lifespan of your brushware, thereby reducing consumable expenditure.

Step A: Choose your filament material

Polyester (PBT)

Polypropylene (PP)

  • Excellent in wet conditions
  • Excellent bend recovery
  • High water resistance
  • Autoclavable to 134°C
  • Resistant to all cleaning agents
  • Very good wear resistance
  • Klipspringer always recommends PBT for optimum results where damp or wet conditions are encountered

  • Good wear characteristics when dry
  • Moderate bend recovery
  • Performs well in dry conditions
  • Autoclavable to 100°C
  • Resistant to all cleaning agents
  • Extremely competitive
  • For dry, dusty conditions PP is extremely satisfactory, particularly when using flagged brushes

Step B: Choose your filament type

Extra soft

Very fine 0.2mmØ bristles packed densely to remove a thin film of dry particles from smooth, even surfaces (eg flour).

Soft flagged hygiene brushware

Soft flagged

0.28mmØ bristles with flagged ends - excellent for removing small particles from uneven surfaces.  NB. Soft flagged bristles are not food contact approved.

Soft medium bristle colour coded hygiene brush

Soft/medium

One of the most common filament types - 0.3mmØ bristles are soft enough to give a clean sweep yet strong enough to agitate small amounts of residue.

Medium stiff bristle hygiene brushware

Medium/stiff

One of the most common filament types - 0.5mmØ bristles provide that extra bit of agitation to remove larger or attached residues.

Combination hygiene sweeper

Combination

Extra stiff bristles at the front of the brush remove stubborn residues, while soft/medium bristles at the back follow up with a clean sweep.

Klipspringer Food Grade Scrubbing brush range

Extra stiff

Extra stiff bristles are only used in scrubs, where high levels of agitation are required to remove stubborn deposits.

Step C: Choose the brush design for your application

The KsPrism range of brushware falls into nine sub-categories based on the function you wish the brush to perform.

  • Sweepers - probably the most used brush on floors and walls, sweepers are available in a selection of filament types to efficiently and effectively remove debris from any type of surface, be it soft flagged sweepers for removing flour from anti-grip floors, or medium-stiff sweepers for removing larger debris from uneven surfaces (e.g. slaughter houses).
  • Brooms - stiffer bristles for loosening and removing more stubborn debris/residues from rougher and usually larger surfaces.  Preempts sweeping.
  • Scrubs - fall mainly into two categories: deck scrubs which have short, extra stiff bristles for loosening engrained/ built up matter on flatter surfaces, and angled scrubs which are available in a selection of shapes and sizes for cleaning corners and angles.
  • Tank, tube and bottle brushes - designed for cleaning inside vessels and pipes of all sizes and diameters.  Typically have a wide splay of bristles for maximum cleaning in small areas as well as tight corners.
  • Hand brushes (aka bannister brush) - the most commonly used hand brush is sometimes known as a bannister brush.  Available in a range of bristle filament types, this is the best brush for clearing flat work surfaces.
  • Groove brushes - Sometimes known as bread flour brushes, groove brushes typically are longer and narrower, as well as having a softer bristle fill for evenly distributing ingredients such as flour.  Groove brushes are considered a production tool rather than a cleaning utensil.
  • Glazing brushes - Originally a bakery staple, glazing brushes are used for applying liquids to product pre and post cook.  Now also used in many other processes where coatings and glazes are applied to value-added products.
  • Churn brushes - From its origins in the dairy, the churn brush has gone on to become one of the most versatile and widely used hand brushes.  With a  slightly shorter yet wider working surface area than bannister brushes, churn brushes are great for applying greater pressure/agitation and moving more stubborn deposits.  Available with a wide selection of bristle fills as well as waterfed and long-nose bristle options, there will always be a churn brush to fit your application!
  • Machine and utility brushes - an array of specialist brushes with unique bristle designs for cleaning hard to access and confined areas in and on machinery.  From short, squat machine brushes to long cutter brushes, choosing the right brush for cleaning your machine is key to completing the job quickly and effectively.

In addition, there are four further categories of brushware sporting additional features:

  • Resin-set brushware - for added security and to further minimise the risk of bristles causing foreign body issues, resin-set brushware uses food grade resin to doubly secure the bristles to the brush stock (body).
  • High heat brushware - Polypropylene bristles have a temperature tolerance of 100°C and Polyester PBT bristles have a temperature tolerance of 134°C.  High heat brushware uses Peek bristles which have a temperature tolerance of 250°C, providing a food safe alternative to stainless steel brushes.
  • Waterfed brushware - to save time and effort use waterfed brushware to apply water and brush at the same time.  Available with standard water-fed quick coupling connections.
  • Long-nose bristle brushes - every factory has those hard to reach corners and crevices which are the bane of the hygiene and technical team!  Long-nose bristle brushes have extended bristles on the end to help you reach into those hard to get to areas.

Did you know?

KsPrism brushware from Klipspringer is the preferred choice of over 1,500 food and beverage product sites in the UK for 8 main reasons:

  • High-density brush stock

KsPrism brush bodies are moulded at high pressure.  This reduces air bubbles in the plastic which makes the bristle anchorage more secure and is the key to our exceptional bristle retention record.  This also makes brushes more resilient to knocks and bangs, and the damage they receive as a result.

  • Folded bristle staple

All bristles are secured in place using a stainless steel staple.  Not only are KsPrism staples inserted at high temperature and high pressure, they are also folded over to provide a completely secure anchorage that simply cannot come undone.

  • High shine finish

Reduces bacteria harbouring risk.

  • Available in 11 strong colours

White, blue, red, yellow, green, black, orange, purple, grey, brown and new pink.

  • Food grade

Made from certified food contact approved polymers.

  • Widest range available focused on the food industry
